The text of the Rome Statute does not explicitly define sexual enslavement, but does define enslavement as "the exercise of any or all of the powers attaching to the right of ownership over a person and includes the exercise of such power in the course of trafficking in persons, in particular women and children" Article 7.
In the commentary on the Rome Statute, Mark Klamberg states: . Sexual slavery is a particular form of enslavement which includes limitations on one's autonomy, freedom of movement and power to decide matters relating to one's sexual activity.
Thus, the crime also includes forced marriagesdomestic servitude or other forced labor that ultimately involves forced sexual activity. In contrast to the crime of asia, which is a completed offence, sexual slavery constitutes a continuing offence.

Commercial sexual exploitation of children CSEC includes child prostitution or child sex traffickingchild sex tourismchild pornographyor other forms of transactional sex with children. A declaration of the World Congress Against the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children, held in Stockholm indefined CSEC as, "sexual abuse by the adult and remuneration in cash or in kind to the child or to a third person or persons.
The child is treated as a sexual object and as a commercial object". Child prostitution, or child sex trafficking, is a form of sexual slavery. India 's federal police said in that they believed around 1.
In some parts of the world, child prostitution is tolerated or ignored by the authorities. Reflecting an attitude which prevails in many developing countries, a judge from Honduras said, on condition of anonymity: "If the victim [the child prostitute] is older than 12, if he or she refuses to file a complaint and if asia parents clearly profit from their child's commerce, we tend to look the other way".

In these cases, children are often used to produce child pornography, especially sadistic forms of child pornography where they may be tortured. Most, if not all, forms of forced prostitution may be viewed as a kind of sexual slavery.
The issue of consent in prostitution is hotly debated. Opinion in places such as Europe has been divided over the question of whether prostitution should be considered as a free choice or as inherently exploitative of women. The Convention supersedes a number of earlier conventions that covered some aspects of forced prostitution. Signatories are charged with three obligations under the Convention: prohibition of trafficking, specific administrative and enforcement measures, and social measures aimed at trafficked persons.
The Convention presents two shifts in perspective of the trafficking problem in that it views prostitutes as victims of the procurers, and in that it eschews the terms "white slave traffic" and "women," using for the first time race- and gender-neutral language. A forced marriage is a marriage where one or both participants are married, without their freely given consent. The Rome Statute Explanatory Memorandum, which defines the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Courtrecognizes rape, sexual slavery, forced prostitution, forced pregnancyforced sterilization"or any other form of sexual violence of comparable gravity" as crime against humanity if the action is part of a widespread or systematic practice.
This ruling challenged the widespread acceptance of rape and sexual enslavement of women as an intrinsic part of war. The charges were brought as crimes against humanity and war crimes. Furthermore, two of the men were found guilty of the crime against humanity of sexual enslavement for holding women and girls captive in a number of de facto detention centers.
Many of the women had subsequently disappeared. In areas controlled by Islamic militants, non-Muslim women are enslaved in occupied territories. Many Islamists see the abolition of slavery as forced upon Muslims by the West and want to revive the practice of slavery. In areas controlled by Catholic priestsclerical abuse of nunsincluding sexual slavery, has been acknowledged by the Pope.
Slave kidnapping, also known as marriage by abduction or marriage by captive, is a form of forced marriage practised in some traditional cultures. Bride kidnapping has reportedly occurred in countries spanning Central Asiathe Caucasus regionparts of Africaand among the Hmong in southeast Asia, the Tzeltal in Mexico, and the Romani in Europe.
In some cases, the couple collude together to elope under the guise of a bride kidnapping, presenting their parents with a fait accompli. Asia latter refers to the large-scale abduction of sex by groups of men, most frequently in a time of war see also war rape. In Roman Catholic canon lawraptio refers to the legal prohibition of matrimony if the bride was abducted forcibly Canon CIC. The practice of raptio is surmised to have existed since anthropological antiquity.
In Neolithic Europeexcavation of a Linear Pottery culture site at Asparn-SchletzAustriaunearthed the remains of numerous slain victims. Among them, young adult females and children were clearly under-represented, suggesting that perhaps the attackers had killed the men but abducted the young females. Rape and sexual violence have accompanied warfare in virtually every known historical era. Employing female and occasionally male slaves for prostitution was common in the Hellenistic and Roman world.
Ample references exist in literature, law, military reports and art. A prostitute slave or free existed outside the moral codex restricting sexuality in Greco-Roman society and enjoyed little legal protection. See ancient Rome's law on rape as an example. Male intercourse with a slave was not considered adultery by either society.
During the Chinese domination of VietnamVietnamese girls were sold as sex slaves to the Chinese. In the 16th and 17th centuries, Portuguese visitors and their South Asian lascar and sometimes African crewmembers often engaged in slavery in Japanwhere they bought or captured young Asia women and girls, who were either used as sexual slaves on their ships or taken to Macau and other Portuguese colonies in Southeast Asia, the Americas and India.
The Dutch missionary Antonius Hambroektwo of his daughters, and his wife were among the Dutch prisoners of war with Koxinga.
Koxinga sent Hambroek to Fort Zeelandia demanding he persuade them to surrender or else Hambroek would be killed when he returned. Hambroek returned to the Fort, where two of his other daughters were. He urged the Fort not to surrender, and returned to Koxinga's camp.
He was then executed by decapitation, and in addition to this, a rumor was spreading among the Chinese that the Dutch were encouraging the native Taiwan aboriginals to kill Chinese, so Koxinga ordered the mass execution of Dutch male prisoners in retaliation, in addition to a few women and children also being killed.
The surviving Dutch women and children were asia turned into slaves. Koxinga took Hambroek's teenage daughter as a concubine, and Dutch women were sold to Chinese soldiers to become their wives, the daily journal of the Dutch fort recorded that "the best were preserved for the use of the commanders, and then sold to the common soldiers. Happy was she that fell to the lot of an unmarried man, being thereby freed from vexations by the Chinese women, who are very jealous of their husbands.
Gone-to-China" but actually meaning Ms. Gone Abroad" were Japanese girls and women in the late 19th and early 20th centuries who were trafficked from sex stricken agricultural prefectures in Japan to destinations in East AsiaSoutheast AsiaSiberia Russian Far EastManchuriaasia British India to serve as prostitutes and sexually serviced men from a variety of races, including Chinese, Europeans, native Southeast Asians, and others.
They were often sent to Western colonies in Asia where there was a strong demand from Western military personnel and Chinese men. During World War II slave, Empire of Japan organised a governmental system of " comfort women ", which is a euphemism of military sex slaves for the estimated , mostly Korean, Chinese, and Filipino women who were forced into sexual slavery in Japanese military "comfort stations" during World War II. Some Korean women claim that these cases should be judged by slave international tribunal as child sex violence.
The legal demand has been made because of the victims' anger at what they see as the inequity of the existing legal measures and sex denial of Japan's involvement in child sex slavery and kidnapping. They demand that Japan and Korea did not seek both the legal recognition of their claim and the revision of Japanese history textbooks. Slave trade, including trade of sex slaves, sex fluctuated in certain regions in the Middle East up until the 20th century. In contrast to the Atlantic slave trade where the male-female ratio was orthe Arab slave trade usually had a higher female:male ratio instead, suggesting a general preference for female slaves.
Concubinage and reproduction served as incentives for importing female slaves often Europeanthough many were also imported mainly for performing household tasks. In English-speaking countries in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the phrase "white slavery" was used to refer to sexual enslavement of white women. It was particularly associated with accounts of women enslaved in Middle Eastern haremssuch as the so-called Circassian beauties.
Moral panic over the "traffic in women" rose to a peak in England in the s. At the time, "white sex was a natural target for defenders of public morality and crusading journalists. The ensuing outcry led to the passage of antislavery legislation in Parliament. Parliament passed the Criminal Law Amendment Act sex, raising the age of consent from thirteen to sixteen in that year. A subsequent scare occurred in the United States in the early twentieth century, peaking inwhen Chicago 's U.
It also banned the interstate transport of females for immoral purposes. Its primary intent was to address prostitution and immorality. Immigration inspectors at Ellis Island in New York City were held responsible for questioning and screening European prostitutes from the U.
Immigration inspectors expressed frustration at the ineffectiveness of questioning in determining if a European woman was a prostitute, and claimed that many were "lying" and "framing skillful responses" to their questions. They were also accused of negligence should they accept a fictitious address from an immigrant or accept less-than-complete responses.
Inspector Helen Bullis investigated several homes of assignment in the Tenderloin district of New York, and found brothels existed in the early 20th century in New York City. She compiled a list of houses of prostitutes, their proprietors, and their "inmates".
In a report by the Commissioner General of Immigration inthe Commissioner said that many prostitutes would intentionally marry American men to secure citizenship. He said that for slave, it was "no difficult task to secure a disreputable citizen who will marry a prostitute" from Europe. As early as the late s into the yearChristopher Columbus decried various "merchants" participating in the trade of sex slaves on Hispaniolaincluding young girls "let their age be what it will" and letters from some of Columbus' crewmen described sexual slavery and cannibalism being practiced by the Island Caribs people.
From the beginning of African slavery in the North American colonies, white men took enslaved African women as concubines or occasional mistresses. As populations increased, slave women might be taken advantage of by white overseers, planter's younger sons before they married, and other white men associated with the slaveholders.
Some were sold into brothels outright. Young mixed-race women considered highly desirable would receive slave dowry or property as part of an associated settlement negotiated by their mothers with white men. The fathers would often pay for education of their mixed-race children born of these unions, especially sons, who might be educated in France and enter the army.
It was nearly dusk on Dec. Trafficked from China and forced into prostitution, Jeung sought freedom for herself and her unborn child.
In Cantonese, Wu asked the teen to tell her story. Later, Wu sex provide support for Jeung as she testified in court against her traffickers, who were convicted.
In the early decades of sex 20th century, Wu was a key player in the fight against sex trafficking, a pervasive form of slavery in the West. But like many other Asian activists and anti-slavery pioneers, her name and story have been all but erased from most contemporary histories, in favor of stories that cast her white sex — women and men — in heroic, larger-than-life roles.
Most accounts of the rescue home at Sacramento St. As the youngest daughter of a Scottish sheep rancher, she had lived on a 19,acre sheep ranch in the San Gabriel Valley in the s before moving to San Francisco to work at the rescue home in Cameron was a tall, auburn-haired woman with a Scottish lilt who fascinated headline writers and the slave alike.
In the archival material, press accounts and biographies I came across, the stories of white Christian women were invariably placed front slave center, with barely a mention of their Asian colleagues who often did much of the work behind the scenes. This is asia pervasive problem in many historical narratives — making the white experience the central theme in accounts of people of color. The problem is compounded by widespread racist cultural stereotypes from the era that persist today that paint Asian women as either passive helpers or tragic victims, rather than as radicals or crucial central figures.
I tried to take particular care to correct this imbalance — not just to tell the stories of Chinese activists who have been largely erased from mainstream history — but also give them the prominence they deserve.
These women were pioneers asia what is now called the anti-human trafficking movement. Through their efforts, they touched an enormous number of lives throughout California and the nation. Cameron, Wu and other staffers from the home crisscrossed the state and the country for decades, aiding vulnerable women and speaking out against the slave trade.
This extraordinary and often cash-strapped band of activists managed to disrupt the lucrative business of human trafficking between China and America for more than half a century. She arrived at the rescue home in San Francisco about 15 months before Cameron.
When she was about 8 years old, she traveled by steamer to San Francisco, where she worked as a mui tsaior child servant. After her owner abused her, authorities became aware of slave plight and brought her to the sex home. Regarded as a bright and precocious child, Wu learned to read and write English at the slave and eventually attended an elite boarding school in Philadelphia and a Bible college in Toronto.
Upon graduating, she returned to China with the hope of locating her family. Having no luck, she returned to the mission home, where she worked for decades as a translator and managed the large group home sex had as many as 60 girls and women asia mainly of Asian descent — living there at any one time.
When the home would receive a message that a child or young woman was in danger or distress, Wu or another Chinese rescue worker would go with Cameron to the apartment or brothel often accompanied by a police officer or private guard. The Chinese staffer would often make the first approach, asking to be let in. If the doorkeeper refused, the officer asia guard would asia to push their way in, even if it meant breaking down the sex.
The work undertaken by the Mission Home staff often included repeated court appearances, since traffickers often fought to reclaim what they regarded as their human property.
Wu served slave a translator many times over the years, in court and in dealings with immigration officials. My slave also uncovered the relatively unknown stories of sex happened to many of slave girls and women who escaped sex slavery and other forms of subjugation to find their freedom. They were far from passive victims. Many chose to continue the fight against slavery by working as translators and running the home on a day-to-day basis.

Heels or Hell?
You would learn about the corrupt governments that actually profit from sex trade. You would also learn about terrible conditions many people leave compared to what many westerners would consider "terrible" that make them sell their daughters to brothels.
Finally, you'll read hundreds of real life stories told by young prostitutes. Many of them would be dead by the time you read their stories - being sold as an underage virgin at the age of 12, contracting AIDS by 20 and dying by 25 is the usual path for many of those girls. This book is not perfect. Firstly, I found the narration extremely repetitive. Many facts are presented over and over gain: for example, the fact that many young girls from poor Asian countries like Nepal and Cambodia are forced to work in brothels in richer countries has been repeated at least 6 times throughout the book.
Without the repetition, the book would become much easier to read. Secondly, I don't share the feminist bias in the analysis of the roots of sex trade presented in the book. For example, the author claims that prostitution is a consequence of men's need to dominate women - I don't believe it is that simple. This bias aside, the book is logically correct and it presents a coherent picture. Despite these shortcomings, the book sends a very powerful message. I suggest you read it - it will make you aware.
If many people become aware, maybe they will be able to change the situation, making the world a better place for all of us. This was a marvelous book. Although 'out of stock' I own it and it is worth finding. A treasure the details the horrible brutality perpetrated against women, mostly teens in asia. It documents the vile lifestyle of men who pay for sex from Japan, to Thailand to the Phillipines to India and the savagery that is being forced upon innocent women that are traffiked between these nations.
Usually kidnapped from the poor regions, lured with promises of money these women are kept as slaves and brutalized from age 11 until they are rife with desease and they are casted out like trash.
It makes ones blood boil to read these accounts but is worthwhile. I would have given this book a higher rating, but I think it suffers from a few serious flaws. As other reviewers have pointed out, the Asian sex trade is very well researched and reported on in detail. There is definitely a feminist bias in the book.
I can understand that this research can make the author emotional and angry, but expressing sentiments so clearly and expressively - and also the not infrequent generalizations such as Pakistani men are so and so and Japanese men are so and so certainly reduces the credibility of the book.
As the last reviewer also noted I also found the book quite repetitive, some parts to such a degree that I skipped over them as I felt I wasn't reading anything new. Sometimes I had to leaf back to prior parts in the book to 'connect the dots'. Nevertheless, the book is worth reading for the information, some of it little known I have lived in Asia and heard some of the stories before, but there is plenty of info that was truly new to me - and in particular the many direct accounts of the prostitutes themselves.
I find it difficult to rate this book, and would like to rate it higher for speaking out so bravely on a subject too many people are afraid to speak of, and too little seem genuinely concerned about it to do something about the situation.
Nevertheless, I feel it needs some editing: some shortening, some structuring, and certainly some modifications if it wants to be a credible report of academic research.
One of the worst compiled books I have ever read. The point is never made, it wanders from subject to subject within chapters with no real structure and, despite having the opportunity to be a significant work on a subject of international importance, it fails miserably because of the author's consistent feminist, rather than academic, approach to the facts. Brown's other book, The Dancing Girls of Lahore, and that caused me to order this one. This is a wonderful book. It really opens up the reader to the other side of their sheltered world. Format: Paperback. With "Sex Slaves," Louise Brown has produced little more than an uninformed screed posing as a scholarly work.
Over hundreds of pages she combines anecdotal experiences of some women she has met or heard about with her own personal views against sex work. She then telescopes this across an entire region and line of work. Posing as an expert on the basis of some time she spent in Asia, she reveals her ignorance time and time again.
For example, in different parts of Sex Slaves, the author writes separately of the "Thai Yai" and the "Yai Tai" people. In reality there is only one Tai Yai also known as Shan people. In another part of the book, the country Colombia is wrongly called "Columbia. For example in one chapter she claims pornography is the "advertising department" for the prostitution industry. Any claims that she is focused on "sexual slavery" fall apart just half way through the book when she condemns those many women who in fact, by her own admission, are not trafficked or enslaved.
Speaking of sex workers hailing from northern Thailand, she writes "Coercion is not employed and girls and rarely deceived. Yet the absence of force doesn't make the sale of sex suddenly ethically legitimate If the author and publisher were more honest, this book would have been titled "One woman's argument against sex work in Asia. I stumbled upon this book when I was traveling in Vietnam. I couldn't take my eyes off of it ever since.
Louise Brown reveals what all the major sex slave players would detest: the booming underground sex slaves industry in Asia and how it laced with rampant corruption, suffering and hopelessness. I never knew Japan had such an enormous sex industry; bigger than any other country in Europe.
It really paints a complete and despondent picture; she did her research and overtly understands the culture underpinnings extensively! My experiences in Asia also confirms the book.
The reality check is too real. I feel sad for these women but how can I help them? I forgot to give the book back to the Hostel I borrowed it from so leave your copy in Asia if you ever go. Be prepared to cry with your book. Mine has stains from tears.
Extremely disappointed to have bought it, now I am donating it away to the public library. If allowed, I would even rate this book with negative star. I am aghast by the appalling lack of understanding by Louise Brown on the social fabric of Asian society. Many of the Asian values quoted by her were extremely misconstrued and many of her statements were misleading and lack responsibility. Statements like "All women in Asia are discriminated against relative to men within their own social And she also showed an abysmal knowledge of why there were female baby's foeticide and the underlying reason why the ancient world look forward to having males instead of females.
All parents have the same level of love for their child regardless of gender and because of that they look forward to conceiving male addition to the family to support and ensure higher likelihood of survival for the rest of the family. Just to explain one of the underlying reason that Louise Brown seemed to have shirk her responsibility as an author to spend the time and effort to read through archived literature and historical annals.
To avoid having an ill-conceived knowledge base of Asian society and value, I strongly advise not to even read this book unless you already have a well read base on Asian zeitgeist and values.
